In a spectacular lesson in why downtowns are better for civic life than shopping malls, a shopping mall in Paramus, New Jersey has blocked a Veterans of Foreign Wars post from selling poppies at the mall over the Memorial Day weekend. VFW posts have been selling poppies to raise money for soldiers at home and overseas since 1922, inspired by the World War I-era poem, "In Flanders Field the poppies grow | between the crosses, row on row" (May 2005).

Atlanta's Galleria Mall will be converted to a mixed-use, neo-Main Street with "cafes, boutiques and village-style building facades with benches, wide sidewalks, streetlights, landscaping and street furniture such as water fountains, and public art fronting on Cobb Parkway". The commission overseeing the project hopes the new development will spin off $1.5 million in revenue annually to help support the Cobb Energy Center for the Performing Arts, now under construction.
